Driving More Local Searches for a Self-Storage Facility

A self-storage facility in Houston, Ohio, with clean units and zero local visibility. Two months of local SEO, AI visibility, and review work turned them into a top-3 result across Shelby County.

01 Initial Challenges

Before we stepped in, this Shelby County self-storage operator was facing several issues that limited their visibility and leads:

Slow review growth. Reviews weren't coming in fast enough to build the social proof renters look for at the moment of decision, and a 4.2 rating wasn't pulling clicks from the map pack.

Weak Google Business Profile visibility. Their profile barely surfaced for "self-storage" and "storage units near me" searches, so prospective renters were calling competitors in Sidney and Troy instead.

Inconsistent local citations. Their business listings across directories had drifted out of sync, with mismatched names, addresses, and phone numbers that hurt their local trust signals to Google.

A website that wasn't pulling its weight. The site was slow, missed the search terms renters actually use, and gave AI assistants no clean signal about location, unit sizes, or availability.

02 How These Issues Held Them Back

Self-storage is a high-stakes decision moment: a renter searches, compares two or three facilities, and books within a day or two. If a facility isn't in the top 3 of the map pack, recommended by an AI assistant, and trusted at first glance through reviews, the rental goes to a competitor. That was exactly the case here. Low rankings, weak reviews, and a quiet website meant the client was losing the short window every renter has to convert.

03 Our Solution

We rolled out a focused two-month plan covering four workstreams that addressed each problem head-on:

Review Generation Strategy. We rolled out a structured review request system that captured satisfied renters at the right moment in their experience, with follow-up sequences for renters who hadn't replied yet. The result: 13 new reviews in two months and a rating jump from 4.2 to 4.9, moving the social proof needle dramatically at the moment of decision.

Google Business Profile Optimization & Management. We cleaned up their profile, fixed inconsistent service categories, added the unit sizes and amenities people actually search for, and ran weekly keyword-targeted posts with facility photos so the profile read as active, credible, and discoverable for the searches renters actually run.

Local Citations & Management. We rebuilt their presence across the local directories that matter, corrected mismatched names, addresses, and phone numbers, and put ongoing management in place so the citations stay aligned over time. Consistent citations are one of the strongest local trust signals to Google.

Website Audit, SEO & AI Optimization. We audited the site end to end, restructured the unit-size pages so renters and AI assistants both understood the offer, tightened the local SEO, and added the clean, structured data AI assistants pull from when answering "best storage near Houston, Ohio" style questions.

04 Results After Implementation

Two months of focused work moved the numbers hard:

Calls increased by 90%. More renters reached out for unit availability and pricing during their decision window.

Website clicks increased by 270%. The optimized site started doing the conversion work the profile sent it.

Impressions increased by 380%. The business now shows up in far more searches across Houston, Sidney, Anna, Troy, and the wider Shelby County region.

13 new reviews and a rating jump from 4.2 to 4.9. Stronger social proof at the moment of decision, which is the single biggest lever in self-storage.

By combining review generation, GBP optimization, local citations, and website improvements, this Shelby County self-storage facility went from invisible to a go-to option for renters across the area.

05 What is a Geogrid?

A geogrid visually maps out a business's search ranking across different locations in its service area. Each point on the grid represents a unique spot, with a number showing how high the business ranks in Google Maps searches for that area.

Lower numbers (like 1, 2, or 3) are the best, showing that the business is among the top results seen by potential customers at that location which people usually click.

Higher numbers (especially 20+) mean the business is far down in the search results and unlikely to be noticed by customers.

06 Understanding Our Client's Visibility Transformation Through a Geogrid

Geogrid comparison for a Houston, Ohio self-storage facility showing rankings for the keyword 'self-storage facility' improving from mostly 20+ on March 18, 2025 to a green-dominant grid with rankings of 1-5 across most of the service area on May 10, 2025

The geogrid data for the keyword "self-storage facility" shows a clear transformation between March 18, 2025 and May 10, 2025. At the start, the client ranked outside the top 20 across most of the service area, with only a small cluster of mid-pack rankings near Houston itself showing any visibility at all.

Two months later, the center of their service area is green: rankings of 1 to 5 dominate the core, with the business consistently appearing at or near the top for renters searching across Houston, New Bremen, Anna, Sidney, and the surrounding towns. Outlying zones improved from 20+ to mid-teens, opening up neighborhoods that previously had zero exposure.

Share of Local Voice climbed from 1% to 21% over the same period, meaning the business now ranks in the top results across more than a fifth of its local grid. Average Top Geo Ranking improved from 18.5 to 12.2, and Average Geo Ranking from 11.3 to 8.6, putting the client on the first page across much of the area instead of well down the list. These improvements track directly to the lift in impressions, calls, and clicks, with more renters finding and reaching out at the moment they search.

Through profile optimization, weekly content, review generation, local citations, and website work, this Shelby County self-storage facility has positioned themselves as a top local choice for residential and small-business renters across western Ohio.
